LIPOSOMA’s evolution: from research tool to broad lipid-based innovations.
LIPOSOMA was founded in 2014 by Asha van Rooijen, marketing a groundbreaking research tool developed by her father, Dr. Nico van Rooijen, who was a cell biologist at VU University. Nico’s pioneering work utilized liposomes as a delivery system for clodronate. His invention became widely adopted in immunological research.
While Van Rooijen used liposome technology for his research tool, liposomes had also been used in other pharmaceutical and research applications. Since the 1970s, liposomes have served as delivery vehicles for a range of compounds, including anticancer drugs, antifungals, and vaccines, helping to improve bioavailability, reduce toxicity, and enable targeted drug delivery.
Asha van Rooijen expanded the company’s reach, applying liposome technology to new industries, particularly in food and pharmaceuticals. Collaborating with renowned experts such as Prof. Gert Storm Dr. Bart Metselaar, and Dr. Peter van Hoogevest, leaders in liposome and other lipid-based technologies for over 30 years, LIPOSOMA has expanded its capabilities, exploring new applications in liposomal technologies across a variety of sectors. The company grew its expertise on the broader potential of liposomes and other lipid-based delivery technologies, focusing on innovative solutions for food products, medical nutrition, medical devices, and pharmaceutical applications.
In 2021, LIPOSOMA expanded its operations with a new facility in Almere Netherlands, where R&D and manufacturing teams collaborate closely with LIPOSOMA’s network of partners to drive innovation forward. The company developed proprietary platform technologies like LiproTeq™ and Nutrateq™.
By 2024, with the introduction of LiproTeq™, LIPOSOMA had transitioned from a research-focused organization to a global innovator. The company now offers a powerful springboard for accelerating innovation in product portfolios for food and beverage manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies worldwide.
