Bart Metselaar - Liposoma

Involvement with LIPOSOMA

Since March 2018 Bart works for LIPOSOMA as a scientific advisor. In January 2019 Bart has started as Chief Operations Officer (COO).

Academia
  • Doctoral in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1995) at University of Utrecht.
  • PharmD degree (1998) at University of Utrecht including an internship in pharmacology at University of Florida at the Department of Pharmaceutics.
  • PhD at the Department of Pharmaceutics and Immunology (1999) at University of Utrecht, with a focus on liposomal formulations for inflammation.
Professional career

After his PhD and postdoctoral tenure at Utrecht University he founded Enceladus Pharmaceuticals BV at 2005. Here he has clinically developed his most important inventions in the field of liposomes into a portfolio of new advanced drugs for arthritis, bowel and eye diseases.

Bart succeeded in conducting a series of preclinical and clinical studies on two different liposomal nanomedicine products. He could finance these studies by securing a series of research grants, two major company prices, various investments and pharmaceutical partnerships.

Since 2012 Bart has been working as a part-time associate professor of advanced drug delivery at University of Twente. In 2015 he took a part-time group leader position at the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen. There he expanded his research into the development of liposomal nanomedicines for the treatment of hematological cancers and solid tumors.

Involvement with LIPOSOMA

In 2018 Greg Pawlik joined LIPOSOMA. At Liposoma he’s responsible for feasibility studies, development of new liposome formulations and stabilization methods.

Academia
  • Master of Science in Biotechnology (2008) at University of Silesia in Katowice, Poland.
  • PhD at Albert Ludwigs Universität in Freiburg, Germany, with a focus on the bioenergetics of biological membranes and the biogenesis of membrane proteins.
Professional career

When Greg Pawlik successfully completed his thesis he moved to Paris. During a traineeship at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) he studied the mode of action of membrane targeting drugs.

In 2013 he took a postdoctoral position at the Membrane Biochemistry and Biophysics group at University of Utrecht. He studied the processes of biosynthesis of phospholipids in yeast. Two years later he joined the Department of Bionanoscience at the Technical University Delft. He was involved in a synthetic cell project, investigating the use of bacterial protein systems for the division of liposomes: minimal cell models. Greg was also part of a project focused on the development of point-of-care diagnostics for rapid detection of pathogens.

Involvement with LIPOSOMA

Martino Ambrosini joined LIPOSOMA in 2019, keen to add his expertise to the group. At Liposoma he’s responsible for quality control, feasibility studies, development of new liposome formulations and stabilization methods.

  • Master of Science in Chemistry (2004) at University of Ferrara in Italy including an internship at GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceutical company.
  • PhD (2009) in Chemical Sciences focusing on reactivity studies and full synthesis of organic compounds active on the Central Nervous System.
Professional career

Between 2005 and 2009, he was trained over two years in GlaxoSmithKline pharmaceutical company in the medicinal chemistry department. Together with an increased knowledge in organic synthesis and state-of-the-art instrumentation, he acquired a good overview of a big company objectives and regulations. He then moved in 2009 to the Netherlands to join DC4U, eager to expand his expertise in immunology and the related chemistry and biochemistry. Working in close collaboration with the Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology department at the Free University Medical Centre, he was involved in many projects aiming to vaccinate against cancer and autoimmune diseases. He was responsible for the design and synthesis of glycan-antigen conjugates, lead product optimization and quality control. He also developed receptor-targeting liposomal formulations in collaboration with the group of Gert Storm at UIPS in Utrecht.

Involvement with LIPOSOMA

Since 2017 Gert Storm is involved with LIPOSOMA as a scientific advisor. Because he is globally recognized as a top expert in the field of liposome preparation and application, he serves as a bridge between LIPOSOMA and academic resources. His scientific ranking (see below) and academic network underline his importance for our company.

  • Doctoral in Biology (1983) at University of Utrecht in the Netherlands.
  • PhD at the Department of Pharmaceutics (1987) at University of Utrecht including a thesis entitled “Liposomes as delivery system for doxorubicin in cancer chemotherapy”.
Professional career

After his PhD Gert worked as a scientist at Liposome Technology Inc. in Menlo Park, USA, and as a guest professor at the School of Pharmacy, part of the University of California, San Francisco. In 1990-1991 he was senior scientist at Pharma Bio-Research Consultancy B.V. in the Netherlands, working on the design, coordination and evaluation of clinical pharmacological studies.
In 1991 he returned to the Department of Pharmaceutics at the Utrecht University. Currently, he is also part-time professor Targeted Therapeutics at the Department of Biomaterials Science & Technology of the University of Twente and Honorary Professor Biomacromolecular Drug Delivery at the University of Copenhagen. He also held a position (seconded) at the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), Division Imaging.
Gert Storm’s research interest is mainly concerned with the design, characterization and (pre) clinical testing of targeted nanomedicine formulations, in particular liposome-based formulations.

  • Since the start in 2014, every year included in the lists of The World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds by Thomson Reuters (in 2018 taken over by Clarivate Analytics), as Highly Cited Researcher.

Nico van Rooijen contributed the results of his research to LIPOSOMA. “I really like to see how my theoretical research has now gained a practical meaning in LIPOSOMA.” As a scientific advisor he still adds value to our company.

Professional career

As a cell biologist, Nico van Rooijen has devoted his entire scientific career to research on the immune system. He was the first to apply clodronate liposomes in that system.
